Mister-e Car Wash

The ‘Mister-e Car Wash’ is an un-narrated comic about a car wash, where getting clean comes at a cost. Oliver Elliot whist at university created the comic, he was inspired by his tutor Toby Morison’s Work.

During a library workshop Toby Morison supplied and showed his own books, one of them being Raghubir Singhs ‘A Way into India.’ The book was a body of photographs that depicted India through the frame of the Ambassadors car, allowing the content to be divided up by wing mirrors, windows etc. Creating and exploring how images could be represented when restricted by one view/scenario.

Olivers fascination with framing, and cropping immediately grew, allowing his work to explore the unknown playing on what’s left for the reader/user to decide. Coinciding with this Oliver also had an interest with the futile and humdrum happenings we often ignore, and this is where the car wash idea was born. A space that for “most, gets less fascinating with age, but is also a breeding ground for interesting typographic choices, misplaced and misspelt adverts a whole lot more.”

Mister-e Car Wash is an A5, 12 page, four colour risograph book with clear coil binding. The book is printed on GF Smith Papers and is an edition of 40. If that wasn’t good enough, it also comes with stickers and a Mister – e Car Wash pencil that act as an extension of the story, blurring the line between fiction and reality.
