New Official People of Print Member is painter, engraver and illustrator, Vanda Sim Sim from Portugal. For the last 12 years she has been working as the high technician of printmaking processes and painting at University of Évora – School of Arts. Vanda graduated in Fine Arts at University of Évora in 2007 and continued her education with a Post Graduate in Intermedia – Visual Arts in 2008.
Vanda’s work takes inspiration from a contemporary landscape that is saturated with physical structures including giant buildings, highroads and advertisement signs. The combination of collected images, and the processes of addition and subtraction often appear in Vanda’s prints. She is influenced by objects she has gathered from her surroundings, and explores the object’s surface for signs of wear and history to reinterpret in to her work.
Vanda states that the process of printmaking “…addresses the process of automation and mass production that surrounds us, as it offers the possibility to combine multiple layers over and over. In contrast, it also allows us to explore the singularity of each print, making it unique and unrepeatable.”
Her work has been exhibited internationally in Portugal, Spain, USA, UK, Argentina, Sweden and Turkey. She is represented in several private and public collections, including University of Évora, University Miguel Hernández de Elche – Fine Arts Academy – Spain, International Print Center New York, Teoartis Gallery and The Painting and Sculpture Museum Association Istanbul.
