‘Sacred Lachrymology’ by Justin Hampton
“This is the art print version of my 2006 poster for Tool at the Gorge in George, Washington. This is an 8 color screenprint measuring a large 24″x36”. I’ve gone into the original poster design and painstakingly revamped the art, taking it to a new level completely. I thought the fans would appreciate something to sink their teeth into while they wait for the new album…
What is Lachrymology? It is known as “the study of crying” and the only sources we know of this ‘science’ are the members of the band, Tool. Despite the continuing mystery of it’s origins, the basic tenets of Lachrymology are still worth study. The essential ideas behind Lachrymology are quite simple, the science teaches that a human cannot develop emotionally, mentally or spiritually without the experience of pain. At one end, misery and the other joy. Can one ever fully appreciate the positive without first experiencing it’s opposite?
A portion of the sales will be going to my old mentor in the screenprinting biz, Jim Sorenson, who has recently hit some hard times. I first started as one of his screen monkeys fresh out of art school pulling squeegees in the back of the old Seattle Tattoo Emporium. He printed for every major Seattle band back in the day including Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, TAD, Mudhoney, and the list goes on and on. He is a legend in the Seattle pantheon of NW Rock as one of the great designers and merchandise makers.” -Justin Hampton
