Zé Monteiro

Zé Monteiro, printmaker and official People of Print Member is relatively new to the world of screenprinting and isn’t afraid to admit it. Much like a squeegee’s, he tells us, his relationship with printing has had its comings and goings. The uncertainty of wild brushing some films to get a vibrant and uncertain print, the challenge of combining the colours, the tweaking and the unnecessary tweak, the texture… and of course showing the actual print.

Monterio started to print in school before University, which led him to a summer internship in his teacher’s studio. A couple of years later, having his Erasmus semester in Southampton, he found himself in a print room with all the ink and paper he could use. A kid in an all-you-can-eat-for-free candy store would be an understatement. A lot of “just 10 more minutes” were said before the technicians would throw him out of the room day after day.

After returning to Lisbon, Zé had to build his own printing screen and homemade set. Trial and error, a lot of book reading and video tutorials were involved in this process. “Shout-out to all of you YouTubers who shared your insights! Finally, I’ve made my homemade studio to work reasonably well”, he says.

Now finding himself back in the UK, London is his base as he builds his dream of becoming an established printer. Well on his way, Monteiro has started an internship at Jealous Gallery and as a screen technician at 3rd Rail Clothing. Keep your eyes peeled for what will happen next on this adventure.

To close, Monteiro announces “hey, I’m always down for a good project so, if you have a ground-breaking idea feel free to drop me a line and share. I’ve always wanted to print with edible ink, for example. Could I add any flavour to it?” — Zé

Nick Satinover

Another exciting new addition to the official People of Print Membership is artist-printmaker Nick Satinover who resides just outside of Nashville in the ever-evolving middle Tennessee sprawl. Nick is an Assistant Professor of Studio Art in the Department of Art and Design at Middle Tennessee State University. Within this role, Nick teaches all levels of printmaking and covers all traditional processes as well as digital and experimental approaches to the medium. He is a father to twin boys (of course, multiples, right?) and pet-parent to an adopted kitten.

His work is informed by observations of the built environment, poetics, colour phenomenon and printmaking’s relationship to signage and didactic information. His current studio works utilise formal abstract language in conjunction with text to create images that create ambivalent visual experiences. Depth vs flatness, pattern vs gesture, chromatic vs achromatic, clarity vs ambiguity, compression vs openness are all strategies employed in his works. These dichotomies point to the negotiations people make as they experience the world which contains them.

Why Summer Is The Perfect Season For Promotional Swag

Winter in Canada can be tough on businesses, especially those brick-and-mortar establishments that rely on foot-traffic as their main means of exposure. So naturally, when the weather gets better, Canadian businesses look to launch compelling marketing campaigns, vying for consumers’ attention out in the streets and over social media.

And, yes, social media marketing campaigns are just fine for what they try and accomplish: they cast a wide net and rely on that numbers game to drum up impressions. Nothing particularly wrong with that, but it can’t be your only marketing strategy, not when the hot weather is pushing consumers outdoors. This summer, market your business with promotional swag – as a leading custom t shirt printing company in Toronto we know the value of promotional apparel, and have seen it work its magic for businesses. Here’s why, this summer, you should market with swag.

First off, more people are out and about, attending street festivals, touring around downtown and lounging on the beach with friends. No doubt people are still online, as, increasingly, phones become a larger part of our lives, but people are more engaged when they’re outdoors. That means that if you want to effectively target potential customers, you should meet them in the street. Take out a table at one of Toronto’s many street festivals, set up a promotional booth near a popular beach or hit up Yonge Dundas square. There are plenty of opportunities to share your business in person with people.

And when you do meet them outdoors, give them a promotional product they will actually use. Really, what are people going to do with an umpteenth pen or keychain? Not a whole lot. But if you hand out promotional apparel, like custom printed t-shirts and hats, you’re almost guaranteed that the recipient will use them. Not everyone has a large stock of t-shirts kicking around, but when summer rolls around they will want something to wear – that’s where your business enters, offering a shirt with your name and logo. They get a free article of clothing, and you get free advertising when they wear it.

As far as costs go, this kind of advertising is very efficient, as you can place a bulk order of custom t shirts for an inexpensive price and have them last a very long time. People will repeatedly wear that t-shirt, providing you years of continued advertising. The same can’t be said about Facebook ads, which are ephemeral and only intermittently effective. With promotional apparel, not only do you see a long term return on investment, but you also see an immediate one as well, as recipients, grateful for receiving a usable gift, are likelier to use or engage with your product.

The bottom line, really, is that during the summer your marketing dollars are better spent engaging with people in person, offering them functional items in exchange for engagement. Who doesn’t like to receive a hat, a t-shirt or even a gym bag? You could even offer these things as part of a little contest giveaway, one of those booths where people are encouraged to step up, spin a wheel and land on a prize – they’re fun, without clubbing people over the head with a marketing tactic. If you want to place a bulk order of t-shirts or hats for your summer giveaway, you can always contact us to learn more about our products and service.

At the end of the day, it’s about making potential customers happy, and joining in that sense of joy and community that summer tends to bring out of people.

Habits, time and happiness

  • How is your art practice going?
  • Do you find time to make stuff?
  • Do you see a progression?
  • Does it feed your soul?
  • Is it a daily habit?
  • Do you have the support that you want to develop new skills?

sketchbook by LindaGermain

When I am in the thick of “should do” projects I often do not see the benefits of certain habits. For example, last fall I took a sketching class and had a habit of drawing little snippets of my day.

  • The cars in the a parking lot when I was waiting for my nephews to be released from school.
  • The lifeguard station at the beach and happy time at the beach.
  • The view from my 4th floor window, where I no longer live.

I did enjoy the class and the drawing process, but it was still something I had to nudge myself to do. My critical voice often stopped me.

urban sketching for printmaking

Now 6 months later, I look a the little sketches and I am amazed at the strong memories they evoke. I can remember the days and how I was feeling with a bit of joy and satisfaction.

Hmmm? Who would have thought?

  • Then I wonder why did I stop drawing?
  • What got in the way?
  • Is there something I can do to get the habit back?

One thing that I know is different is that the class ended and I did not have the community support.  I know I get more accomplished when I am part of a class or community.

The powerful feelings of pride and satisfaction that this little sketchbook has motivated me to start sketching again. I would never have believed that a little sketchbook could generate such strong and happy memories.

sketchbooks created during a class

You have to try it!

Put a pen and sketchbook in your bag and pull it out when you find yourself waiting.

Magic could happen.

KIDS DESIGN - marks & spencer

I am back onto one of my favourite topics today - prints and patterns for children, and these snapshots are all  Marks & Spencer. They've been in the news this week announcing store closures and plans to focus online. But despite any company woes they remain a great place to seek out colourful, on trend kids design. Thumbs up to the M&S buyers who are certainly choosing some great prints. Below

Great information on Make Magazine

M.C. Pressure — Florida’s Director of Imagination

In 2014 Ryan Tempro realized that to him printmaking was the missing component digital design lacked. That’s when he started M.C. Pressure. Back then, the company was a small press on a table in his room mate’s kitchen in St. Augustine, Florida. Since then the company has grown. M.C. Pressure acquired new presses, expanded the line, and collaborated on several custom pieces.

The company’s main workhorse is an Original Heidelberg Windmill from 1958. The process of letterpress starts with an idea, firstly sketching the idea and then transfer it into a digital format. That digital file is output and becomes a printing plate. The plate is then put onto the press and the machine works its magic. The machines rollers ink the plate, then moves the paper into the press, debosses the design into the paper. This creates a texture that is exclusive to letterpress.

Another printmaking process M.C Pressure offers is hot foil stamping. They have a Heidelberg GTP from 1972, and it’s a beast. This technique parallels letterpress. The machine heats up a copper die and then presses the design into foil and lays it into the paper instead of using any inks. Foil allows for color to pop and also allows for light colors on dark paper stocks.

Printmaking feels special in that it allows for a handmade touch. The old technology of the presses combines with new graphic design techniques. This pairing creates something that feels one of a kind and is something that you will want to hold onto.

ScreenHunter_348 May. 15 16.08International Coatings’ blog site has moved!

We recently debuted our new iccink.com website and have moved the blog site as part of the new website. All our blogs from the past have been moved and we’ve added new ones in the recent weeks.

Here’s the link: https://iccink.com/blog/ or you can access it via http://internationalcoatingsblog.com as well.

Please be sure to re-set your bookmarks so you will still be able to check our latest posts!
