Eye Magazine — Issue 95

Since its inception, Eye magazine has called itself ‘the international review of graphic design’. And the latest edition – after two issues that have focused on illustration and typography – reaffirms the magazine’s commitment to design and designers in an issue packed with examples of both.

In the editorial, editor / co-owner John Walters writes that the ‘enduring value of designed, graphic form is shown in all the very different feature articles … from the polished work of Atlas’s Astrid Stavro and Pablo Martín to the political posters of the late David King.’

The cover art includes an interpretation of Magnus Rakeng’s Eye logo by venerable illustrator / animator / designer R. O. Blechman, the subject of an extensive interview by Matt Willey (New York Times Magazine), along with tributes from Françoise Mouly and Genevieve Bormes (The New Yorker) and D. B. Dowd.

Other articles range from the contemporary graphic design of Brooklyn studio Triboro to the treasures of a historic printing works in northeast France; from João Farkas’s Brazilian carnival photos to an interview with Briar Levit, director of the documentary Graphic Means. As always, there is an extensive reviews section covering design and visual culture worldwide, and a Photo Critique by Rick Poynor.

The Eye team will be travelling to New York at the end of January to launch Eye 95 at the Type Directors Club in Manhattan, at an evening event featuring Blechman and Triboro’s David Heasty and Stefanie Weigler (6-9pm, Tue 30 Jan).
