“Our memories are faulty. Events that we are convinced we remember are in fact only memories of our own memories, facsimiles of things gone by. With each re-calling of an event, we reconstruct each detail.”
An on-going series of work by photographer and artist Felicity McCabe is currently on show at the Great Eastern Wall Gallery and is presented by Wren Artists. The exhibition opened on 15th September 2017, but if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, you still have plenty of time to cast your eye over the photographs on display as it will be running until late in December 2017.
This is the second instalment of the Wren Artists series of contemporary photographic exhibitions at the Great Eastern Wall Gallery. Felicity McCabe’s collection, titled ‘Archive’ features photographs printed at approximately 4 metres wide, which enlarges McCabe exploration of selective themes which run throughout her ‘Archive’ project.
As you can see from the images here, Felicity McCabe’s creations have a sophisticated modernity which brings a completely alternative experience to the space. McCabe both constructs, and questions, the imperfections of human memory within these seemingly observational still life images.
Archive is McCabe’s most recent photographic investigation, following a consistent theme, considering the nature of time and memory, a subject matter which flows from project to project. She has used archival photography as an original source material, and has then fabricated elements from each scene to create new constructs of those particular moments in time.
The sourced images have been taken from national photographic press coverage from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s, and carry themes, issues and stories from their own time. Each image McCabe had produced is a personal reflection of what she has observed in her selection of the historical imagery. These images retain their coined name, creating a contextual anchor from interpretation through to its original source. It is interesting to see how the themes that compose the archival images are still relevant to today’s society decades later.
