O1 Magazine

With Immigration being a massive talking point of the 21st Century, o1 Mag derives its name and inspiration from the complexity of the visa classification for foreign workers granted by the United States. Highlighting how on earth we’re meant to prove that we’re “individuals with an extraordinary ability in the arts.”

The magazine has just released its 02nd Issue, where an exhibition was held in a Chinese mall beneath the Manhattan bridge in the Two Bridges district of New York City. The second issue takes the form of a catalogue and also serves as a record of people who travel through different circumstances, exploring both people applying, acquiring the visa and even delving into alternate methods people use to be able to stay in the United States. Did anyone say Green card?

The 02nd Issue has a strong aesthetics that was influenced by the proportions, space and colour of the exhibition space it was situated within, specifically being influenced by the booming of the trains that ran directly above the site. For the 2nd issue the classic American typeface Franklin Gothic was used as a starting point. The designer behind o1 Magazine was able to create two new typefaces named “Franklin Gothic Heavy Compressed and “Franklin Gothic Two Bridges.”

Due to the quickly assembled nature of the publication with laser printing and ring bound finishes the magazine exists as a prompt and preface to the humanitarian issue as opposed to a long form precious piece of design and journalism.
