We recently saw the new launch of Failed States; a biannual journal by artist Jamie Atherton. The publication combines original short writing on both place and contemporary artworks. For each issue contributors are asked to respond to a broad theme: one word describing a state of terrain considered to possess qualities of amorphousness, wildness, instability, collapse, liminality, peripherality and/or delineation.
The texts published in Failed States are generally less than 200 words with “pithiness encouraged.” Allowing the content to range from sentences, paragraphs, lists, ideas, anecdotes, cry for helps, gossip, rumour, fantasy etc. The first issue saw work from a range of established writers such as Olivia Laing, Paul Clinton and Jeremy Atherton Lin. It also contained work from artists such as Matt Connors, Cally Spooner, Martin John Callanan, and film maker Matt Wolf. Issue 01 also included particularly interesting journal entries from Joseph Currans time spend making a film on Saint Helena.
