Emma King

Whilst wondering around the design show at CSM, I was immediately intrigued by the 15 metre reel of print hanging to the right of me. I went over to investigate and it was the work of MA Communication Design Graduate Emma King.

The length and choice of presentation within the exhibition hints as both the history and future of publishing, with such notorious leaders and speeches being presented on scrolls, and looking at now how many people scroll through such long pieces of writing online.

The project named 1984 by @realdonaldtrump is a “rewriting of George Orwell’s dystopian novel using tweets from the President Donald Trumps Twitter account.” The publication rewrites the first chapter of 1984 by George Orwell. The book itself spans 150 A3 Landscape pages with the text of 1984 being placed in red falling down the page and the tweets of the president reading horizontally across the pages.

The publication explores and presents themes of the parallels between the novel and Trumps peculiar rise to power. Further highlighting one of Orwell’s famous theories, which is to “double think,” meaning you are believing something, you know not to be true.
