Izzi Hays is a 21 year old designer passionate about social innovation, craft and creating work that connects with humans, due to growing up all over the world she has a wealth of knowledge on different cultures, this also means that she “never knows who to cheer for in the olympics” (What a shame!) By focusing on the subject of how a playground is the microcosm of society and how the language of play is universal, Izzi was able to create the publication Swings and Roundabouts.
Swings and Roundabouts acts as a collection of playground markings curated from both James Mollison (creative editor of Colors Magazine) photographs, research and primary research from collaborators based as far as Canada and United States. The books explores the similarities and differences of games within different cultures and societies. The book specifically explores and looks at how lines can be used to bring people together as opposed to just dividing?
By using simple design techniques Izzi was able to curate a publication that keeps the lines at the forefront of the publication. By collating all of the different markings into one succinct publication Izzi has automatically brought many cultures together, the very fact that they exist next to each other in such an organic natural form sets an example of how potentially easy it could be to replicate in the real world. We can all hope…
