Gone are the days of having a leaving party and giving a mildly drunk leaving speech? Johanne Lian Olsen a type and editorial based designer from Norway has set the gifting bar high whilst working at Studio Claus Due by designing a personalised typeface as a departing gift. Due is a font designed with “slimness and tallness in mind,” and of course her old employer. This typeface embodies Johanne’s former employer by focusing on height and weight of both the letterforms and her former boss. The extended letterform contrasted with the weight of the typeface depicts humanistic qualities. By working with these attributes Johanne has been able to design a bold, conceptual and aesthetically pleasing font.
Johanne also drafted the typeface into 4 different weights and cuts, consisting of regular, bold, italic and a special cut named lunch, which of course was created to replicate how the font would react after a good meal. (Maybe Johannes former employer was a strong advocate of a good meal? I mean…who isn’t.)
The typeface itself has been displayed within its own type specimen book exploring the weights, glyphs and even a much loved poster section. The book has taken on a minimalistic design approach using bold colours and typographic detailing to showcase the bespoke font. Some of Johannes work also includes clients such as Nike, Ikea and The Unseen. One of her most recent projects is a continuation of the newspaper “The Eye of the Beholder.” With the outcome being a beautifully designed publication all about noses, in both the physical and cultural form.
