I’m sure you know by now, People of Print love physical publications and tactile, tangible print, so naturally Fiamme caught our eye instantly. Fiamme (Flames) focuses on the contemporary periodical publishing scene, in particular magazines which feature art, fashion, architecture and design.
As an exhibition, held from May 5th until June 1st 2017 at the very fitting Tolentini, Library in Venice, Fiamme showcased fifty international titles which had all been created over the last ten years, printed in small runs and circulated to particular audiences. All the magazines which were selected represent sophisticated and well researched themes and highlight a clear understanding of graphic design and print. As a result the end products are publications created to a high specification for readers to collect and keep.
Fiamme breaks down and combines the magazines into four sections which comprise of exploration, which explore places through geography, writing and photography; next is classical which brings together forms of publishing which already exists with innovative content, research and theories; the third is concentration all of which focus on one theme which is very concise; finally intimacy is the category for the publications which develop a relationship with their reader and often relate to gender issues, the body and sexuality.
Fiamme begun with the intention to start a new collection of magazines and journals in the library of the Iuav University of Venice. And putting the exhibition together proved difficult at times, due to the selected titles having such limited runs and being hard to locate.
Later this year Fiamme plans to further expand into a publication that will include edited transcripts of the exhibition discussion panel, contributions by scholars, curators and designers, alongside exhibition views and photographs of the magazines. So make sure you keep an eye on them.
