Light It Up Blue Crafts in honor of World Autism Month

Painted Light Bulbs

Supplies:

Glass light bulbs with removable lids. These can be found at a local craft store, or online here: https://www.amazon.com/Clear-Plastic-Fillable-Light-Bulbs/dp/B00561W1UK

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Bathroom cups
  • Acrylic paint (Light Blue and Dark Blue pictured)

Cleaning your bulbs:  Remove the light bulb lid and wash the interior of the light bulb using rubbing alcohol. Swishing the alcohol completely around the light bulb will ensure that all dust, dirt, etc. is removed and allows a clean surface for paint or glitter to adhere to. Pour out remaining alcohol.

Allow your bulb to drain and dry completely, which usually takes a couple of hours. Any remaining alcohol left inside the bulb will hinder the adherence of any paint or glitter, so this step is vital for the success of your project!  I turned the bulb upright and placed it in the small bathroom cups to let it drain out into the cup. If the cups are too large, you may put paper towels in the bottom to allow excess rubbing alcohol to drain completely out of the light bulb.

After the light bulb(s) have drained completely, pour a little acrylic paint inside the light bulb.

This paint is thick and will need to be rotated around the light bulb in order to cover the entire inside surface. You may pour any excess back into the paint bottle or into another light bulb. Allow light bulb to dry upside down in cup again, at least overnight. If not completely dry after overnight, also allow light bulbs to dry completely in an upright position before recapping.

Glitter Light Bulbs

Supplies:

Glass light bulbs with removable lids. These can be found at a local craft store, or online here: https://www.amazon.com/Clear-Plastic-Fillable-Light-Bulbs/dp/B00561W1UK
Rubbing alcohol
Bathroom cups
Blue glitter
Pledge Floorcare Finish
Small funnel (not required, but helpful with preventing a glitter mess!)

Pour the Pledge Floor Care into light bulb and swirl it around completely (do not shake as it will create bubbles) so that the entire light bulb is covered with finish. Then pour remaining finish back into the container or into another light bulb. Next, pour in your blue glitter (I used a small funnel to minimize glitter spills.) and swirl it around the same way you did with the cleaner ensuring the entire light bulb is covered in glitter. Allow light bulb to dry completely overnight in an upright position before recapping.
