VISCOUS Publications | Cult Classic

Exploring the vibrant, nostalgic, and often pleasingly seductive printed explorations of thought fuelled by passion, aesthetic, and design is Amy Hood’s publication CULT CLASSIC. This debut is part of Hood’s launch of her new publishing company entitled VISCOUS Publications, which spans its works across books, posters, and other tangible items.cult-classic-final-copyscreen-shot-2016-12-07-at-23-10-06 screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-23-10-08
Cult Classic is a 56 page publication that explores the phenomena of both the idea of physical, heavily worship-influenced cults, specifically within the late 60’s and 70’s, and the idea of what causes something to become a “cult classic”, how is represented in movies, cultures for example. This evocative piece of print is ‘Ladislav Sutnar catalogs meets Fiorucci  drenched in the darkness of the drug induced 60’s.’ screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-23-10-30
Creative director Amy Hood has filled its pages with lurid sexual sexual imagery, shocking violence, intense devotion and thought provocation. Playing on the seductive, and filled with wonderfully shot cinematic images from photographer Madison Kreiger, the book also contains probing essays by several brilliant women, including cultural historian Laura Mcklaw Helms and writer and photographer Stacy Mark.

The narrative features the stars of the “Cult of the Femme”, a tale of wide-eyes girls doped by the lotus of charisma and compelled to capture the young blonde heroine to please their leader. The styling and art direction hints back to when social upheavals begat the murderous Manson Family, Jim Jones and his Kool-Aid-drinking Peoples Temple and other fringe groups who shocked the masses in the 60’s and 70’s.
