International Exhibitions by GDFS

It has been a busy autumn for the team at GDFS, with exciting events and exhibitions including International Poster Exhibition, Design Displacement Group: NO EXIT, and PUTPUT: Enormous Details. This truly is a unique chance for you to witness a carefully curated selection of artworks produced with a focus on socialising, partying and hands-on projects.

International Poster Exhibition
Featuring 200 posters designed by 178 designers from across the globe, the International Poster Exhibition offers attendees a rare opportunity to see a curated shortlist of submissions to 2016’s Graphic Design Festival Scotland’s International Poster Competition which was held earlier this year.

What’s more, the organisers have also curated a library of books to provide more details on the broader context of poster and graphic design. Here you can enjoy many titles published by the likes of Phaidon, Graphic Magazine, Tate Publishing, Laurence King Publishing, Unit Editions, AbeBooks, Chaumont Design Graphique, Pyramyd Éditions, Verlag Hermann Schmidt, Lars Mueller, Artbook / D.A.P., Optik Books and Workman Publishing.

“The exhibition provides a new context for the posters and also for graphic design as a practice which embeds itself so comfortably and often passively in our everyday lives. Some of the works exhibited were designed with a political agenda; attempting to reveal truths and lies or contribute to ongoing dialogues of war, security, power and nationality. Others raise awareness of issues around equality, consumerism and privacy.” – James Gilchrist, Director.

Design Displacement Group: NO EXIT
One for design lovers and thinkers alike, Design Displacement Group have taken a fresh approach to exploring issues around labour conditions, efficiency, isolationism, populism and panic in a political Union no one can practically ‘exit’ from. Themed in line with the current social climate, the 3-way projection installation uses algorithms to create a series of parallel and infinitely changing narratives, played in sync with a mystical and euphoric soundtrack by LA-based musicians OOFJ.

PUTPUT: Enormous Details
The collaborative practice of Stephan Friedli (CH) and Ulrik Martin Larsen (DK) aka PUTPUT are showcasing a selection of their playful yet razor sharp work throughout the Lighthouse. The Swiss/Danish duo examine the powerful role of everyday objects and “explore the metaphysical relationships connected to everyday objects… and navigate the increasingly busy intersection where photography, sculpture and design meet.” – Stephan Friedli (CH) and Ulrik Martin Larsen (DK)

The annual ‘Graphic Design Festival Scotland’ boasts a vibrant, creative environment and attracts at least 6,700 visitors each year. The programme is run by James Gilchrist, Beth Wilson and Victoria Donnelly of Glasgow-based design practice Warriors Studio.
