You can help us celebrate a founding Sister’s 148th birthday! Cora Bollinger Block’s story started on September 14, 1868. Not only was she instrumental in beginning the story of Alpha Xi Delta, she was the bold and talented leader who led the charge for many of Alpha Xi Delta’s firsts.

Cora’s apartment, with Bertha Cook, was the first meeting place of Alpha Xi Delta.

Cora was the chair of the committee which presented the plans for the formation of Alpha Xi Delta to school officials. It was her clear thinking and vision that led the presentation to meet with faculty approval.

Cora was elected the first Chapter President of Alpha Chapter and went on to be the first National President.

Cora installed the Beta Chapter at Iowa Wesleyan College on June 9, 1902, the first chapter to be installed after Alpha Xi Delta became a national fraternity. She also installed Alpha Xi Delta’s first chapter in Ohio, Gamma Chapter at the University of Mount Union, on August 20, 1902.

 Cora presided over the first National Convention in 1903.

 

After serving as the first Chapter President, then the first National President, Cora retired from active service with Alpha Xi Delta, feeling it was “well launched upon successful growth.”

Though she died in 1941, she helped to set the Fraternity on a path of growth and success that we are still experiencing today. Her Alpha Xi Delta story is so much richer than these few statements. More than 160,000 Sisters have followed in the footsteps of Cora and our Founders, helping to build Alpha Xi Delta to what she is today.

Your Alpha Xi Delta story started on Bid Day and continued through late night talks, laughter and tears, graduation, Sisters’ weddings and your own bridesmaids, and finding new alumnae Sister-friends. Cora helped to start that story for you.
