Water Based Screen Printing

Water Based Screen Printing

If you know even a little about screen printing, then you know how spectacular it can be.  It doesn’t take too much to create a visually stunning custom garment.  Even better, it’s fun to design and create custom clothing and then watch as it becomes a real, finished piece.  What you may not know, is how many options are available for screen printing out there.  The two most common screen printing options are the use of Water Based Screen Printing and the use of Plastisol Screen Printing. Originally, screen printing was all done with plastisol inks, which are PVC based and contain virtually no solvent.  Plastisol inks won’t dry up when you leave them out and can be re-used without any detriment to the pigment.  The downsides are that for some the stiff ‘hand’ that plastisol prints have when dry is unappealing and it requires the use of strong chemicals to clean up the inks after printing.

Water Based Screen Printing

Water based screen printing was developed as an alternative to using plastisol.  As with all things, it comes with its own advantages and disadvantages.  Water based inks will expire after some time so you must use the right amount for the size of the print job to avoid waste.  Water based inks leave a soft ‘hand’ behind which is a major perk for many people.  You also have the choice between discharge printing and water based acrylic ink.  Discharge ink is a specially formulated water based ink that will remove the existing color in the garment, the “discharge”, and deposit the new desired color in its place.
